Now & Then : Changes we demand!

It’s been two years to the dreadful Nirbhaya rape case, the scary rape case that led the nation step out and fight for all the safekeeping and rights of women in this society. But where do we stand? Instead of all the efforts that were pitched in, are we safe yet!

A little glance on how far this year has been!

92 women raped in India every day, 92 women raped in India every day.

“A 23-year-old Dalit woman, mother of two, was dragged out of her farmhouse while she was alone with her children and gang raped by five people in Gunga village on the outskirts of the state capital”

“A 40-year-old was allegedly gang raped in Basirhat where by-poll was conducted on Saturday. “

“A 45-year-old plumber, attached to a Kandivali-based hospital, was arrested by the Aarey Colony police on Friday on charges of raping his step-daughter.”

“A cab driver accused of raping a 25-year-old working woman in Delhi on Friday night.”

“32-year-old woman who works as a attendant at the Hooghly district Hospital was allegedly gang-raped by four men when she was on way to the hospital for work.”

“A four-year-old girl was kidnapped from her Nalasopara building and raped in a secluded place in Virar by an unidentified man.”

“A 14-year-old girl was raped by a teenaged boy, her neighbor, two years elder to her, in Shahpura Chavani area”

And a lot more!!

Having lived in Delhi for almost 20 years of my life (having used public transport regularly, having walked alone on busy roads as well as secluded lanes at peak hours and otherwise), I have come to the conclusion that my family and I are as much to blame for the lack of safety and ridiculous fears that our gender experiences as the next ruffian eyeing me at every corner. Why? Because the minute someone pounces, pinches, or comments on me, I, like every other woman, have two choices: one, to retaliate and make it clear that it is unacceptable, and two, cower down, look for the shortest route home, and make a mental note to avoid that particular road, shop, locality, or corner whenever possible.

Very, very unfortunately, what all girls are taught to do is the latter. And I used to do that myself, until I realized how utterly wrong this choice is. I never discouraged an indecent man from repeating his actions; I only emboldened him by reaffirming his idea of power over me. And I single-handedly made it so much worse for all the girls and women who were about to cross that place after I did by not discouraging the man to try it again. As Gandhi had once said, “Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” All the insignificant acts add up to become a trend and then the general norm.

Dhavalikar said women should not wear bikinis on Goa’s beaches “for their own safety”, and “girls in short skirts visiting pubs” is against local culture.

Shankaracharya of Puri Swami Nischalananda Saraswati declared western influence responsible for destroying the values and principles of the country. “There is need to change this. Before Independence we were able to maintain our culture and values but in the last 65 years we have lost a great part of it. Such horrific incidents don’t happen all of a sudden. They happen when the thin line of culture and values are crossed in the name of civilization and development.” (Times of India)

Manohar Lal Sharma, a lawyer who represents three of the accused in Nirbhaya case, speaking to Bloomberg in an interview: Sharma said the male companion of the murdered 23-year-old was “wholly responsible” for the incident as the unmarried couple should not have been on the streets at night. “Until today I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady,” Sharma said in an interview at a cafe outside the Supreme Court.

Asaram Bapu, self-proclaimed “godman”:She should have taken God’s name and could have held the hand of one of the men and said ‘I consider you as my brother’, and should have said to the other two ‘Brother I am helpless, you are my brother, my religious brother.’”

Jitendar Chattar (leader of a Khap Panchayat): “To my understanding, consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents. Chowmein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts.”

Jamaat-E-Islami Hind (Islamist organisation). Statement released by Secretary General Nusrat Ali: “Co-education should be abolished and proper education facilities meant exclusively for women should be available at all level of education. Educational institutions should prescribe sober and dignified dress for girls.” (Times of India)

This place is unsafe for women! It’s not about just Delhi or Mumbai or Bangalore or any other metro city, it’s about the horizon. The moment we step out of our place: “Will a rickshaw be a safe option or the local bus? This auto driver looks skeptical I should wait for the next one! It’s late, I should inform someone and they must keep a track on me! Do I have a Women Safety app on my hand phone? Is my pepper spray ready for use at any minute?” My mind is full of all these thoughts “always”. There is no minute of my day when I don’t have to calculate all this aspects of being a “Woman” in this society.

Nobody but us have to move up and get rid of this patriarchal mindset. How can we blame “the society”, we are a part of it! If I ask this question today, what have I done to change the situation or just to change the mindset, or the least to improve anything; I stand blank. I have done NOTHING, and if I have not, how can I question anyone else around.

How to take care of your skin in monsoon!

After the deep treatment of extreme heat of the sun, those sunburns and tans, monsoon comes as a good news. But what about the  damp and humid weather that gives you loads of infections and skin troubles? Well its unavoidable.Monsoon is that time when your skin behaves a little strange and is often unstable. Hence it is very necessary that you take care of your skin during this season in order to look fresh and beautiful. Following are a few Skin Care tips that you need to follow.

1. . Cleansing: The skin should be cleaned 3-4 times a day with non-soapy face washes. This helps to clean excessive oil and dirt from the skin pores and helps it breathe.

Dry Skin: Try using almond paste or honey cleanser. Take ten crushed almonds and make a paste and add two tsp of honey. Massage on face for 5 to 7 minutes, rinse face and pat dry.

Oily Skin: You need a very mild cleanser to get the dead cells and grime off from skin. Use pure oatmeal scrub to cleanse oily skin or use ripe papaya pulp as a mild exfoliant.

2.Toning: Non-alcoholic skin toners should be used to tone the skin twice a day to maintain the skin’s pH balance. Toning revives the skin and gives it an impeccable sheen.

Dry Skin : You need to mildly tone this skin type as the pore size is small. Try five drops chamomile oil in one table spoon of milk.

Oily skin : The great idea is to use ten drops of lavender oil in one tablespoon water.

3.Moisturising: If your skin appears to be dry, moisturise it with a good moisturiser. Application of rose water, glycerine or almond oil before retiring to bed is beneficial in keeping the skin supple and healthy.

Bonus :Don’t rub your face while drying it

The facial skin is very delicate so rubbing it with a towel can cause hyper-pigmentation. Gently pat it dry, avoid any kind of friction

I will be back soon with some home remedies to keep your skin alive in the damp monsoon.

Cheers!

Beat the monster beat the heat!

So the monster a.k.a Summer Sun ;is back here again, and is here to stay for long. All the remedies that our mothers and grandmothers have always told us must be utilized now, to stay pretty , beautiful and shining like always.

Lets try and recollect what all those amazing ladies have always listed out to beat the heat.

1. Avoid the damn sun: As much as you can.

jpg_4054-Lowering-Sun-Mascot-Cartoon-Character

so , I know its not easy to avoid this monster but try to stay indoors in the peak hours( 11:00- 15:00). Cover yourself well whenever you are stepping out in the sun. Be careful , it about your skin and your hair!

2. Exfoliate :

Including exfoliation into your daily regime is a must to avoid dullness and sadness of skin and to  prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers! Exfoliants remove old, dry, dead skin cells, toxins and other deposits and allow new skin cells to surface. Scrub your elbows and knees at least twice a week to get rid of dead tissues.

Rub a slice of lemon with sugar every alternate day to keep them clean and to remove tan.

Try any exfoliating body scrub this can be used every alternate day.

3.  Water is your best friend:

Begin your day with a glass of water and end with a glass of water. Make sure your intake is somewhere between 8-10 liters per day to keep your self balanced in terms of moisture and also this will help in detoxification.

Drinking-Water

4.  Too much of Sunscreen!Yes you do need it!

Applying a little amount of sunscreen on your face is never enough.

Studies have stated that one must apply enough sunscreen all over  the time and in continuation; once in a day is a bad idea.

Choose your sunscreen according to your skin type and keep applying every 3-4 hours.

I personally us Sweat Proof Sunscreen from Kaya Skin clinic with a SPF 30. It does wonders.

Cost : 995 INR

6. Yoga

Whatever has been said in the above points must be followed religiously but getting into Yoga keeps you pepped up and multiplies your benefits. Expose your skin to fresh air with an early morning yoga. This increases the blood circulation in your body and keeps you fresh all day long. If not yoga make sure you are doing one or the other form of exercise at least for 15-20 minutes everyday.

Stay fit and stay beautiful people!

P.S: All the pictures are sourced from Google.

Cheers!

The other side of the coin.

It was a Delhi Transport Corporation bus, unusually loaded that day. There was a lot of young crowd in it and
women were fighting for the seats reserved for them. Four women out of the lot got the reserved seats and
rest of us travelled the distance. But I still don’t understand why women fight for this 10% or 25% reservation
in buses, trains, metros or wherever. Why can’t we realize that we are ourselves motivating gender biasing.
We appreciate the gift that eases are life and agree to it open handed and prompt a NO, when it comes to
changing your routine lifestyle. Where are all the debates over Gender equality lost? Are we not ourselves
portraying an image that indicates we are not equal to men?

We live in a society that both flourishes and demolishes the women power. We worship the womanhood
in the form of deity and rape the same womanhood just to prove that this side of the coin is not worth the
respect and position it has been given. Women don’t require reservations or percentage share in the clumsy
box, we demand respect, respect to what we are and feel good about it, respect to have equal stand in the
family and the society, respect to roam around any possible time of the day, respect to be the other side of the
coin.

Rather than fighting for reservations and extra coaches in trains, we (the modern day women) should sit back
and analyse why do we feel a glitch when we are asked to step out of the house alone after 8 in the evening,
why do we get a stream of phone calls from our parents or husbands when we are late out of house. Even
though we are with the safest of the people, in the back of our head there lives a fear. Honestly this has not
been developed recently; this is a practice we have been following since ages and this has become so much a
part of our lives that we have stopped probing on this trend. We are being taught the art of self defence, the
sense of dressing and judging the man’s body language but on the contrary why can’t we teach the other side
the art of equality to be given to the other half share of the coin. Instead of being afraid and accepting the fact
that The Nation is not safe, why can’t we women take a step ahead and make the world realise that we are the
50% stake holders of the society and we will conquer this at whatever time we want and in whichever attire
we dress.

Come out and have your say in the crowd. Slap the man back who misbehaves. Get the courage in you. Be
confident. Be you. Prove it to the world that you are the other side of the coin, without which the coin loses its
identity.

The hot crazy geek

Barney Stintson once said : “ A girl is allowed to be crazy as long as she is equally hot. Thus, if she’s *this* crazy, she has to be *this* hot. You want the girl to be above this line. Also known as the ‘Vickie Mendoza Diagonal’”

I have always taken pride in saying that that I have had very few women around me but the ones I am friends with are smart, confident and intelligent people. I have always well-liked them and they have been a constant inspiration for career , fashion, food, relationships and all that I can count on the tips.

And then, along comes a character that reminds me of the hot crazy scale from the legend.
I have always known that the research people are crazy but you compliment your job and make that hot too. You are the awesome example that can show me all the emotions in one single day, no matter how serious you are you know how to make smile out of it, no matter how angry you are you know how to show love through it. You never get tired from the endless drama that we put up in front of you and you know us in and out still prefer to be with us wherever we go (this makes you more awesome #Respect).
We might not talk for long, we might not share everything but there still exists a thread that ties us into the best of forms and makes us look beautiful.
A lot of people claim to be loyal and loving; one is blessed to find them around with no money involved. You might be a little boring at times 😀 but life is bazingaa when you are around :*

The LDR(Long Distance relationship) Syndrome

The very famous LDRs or maybe we call them as Long Distance Relationships, which everyone (almost) faces at one or the other time. Some call it easy, some call it ruthless and some say “Nothing changes when you have real love involved”, but honestly it is not the idyllic situation that one would ever want. It has both pros and cons of its own; this gives the so called “SPACE” but might take away all the happiness that you must receive when you are in a relationship. This thing can only be handled well by people with strong heart and will power.

Respect.001

In LDRs the ball roles from happy to disgusting times, butterflies in the stomach to get the hell out of here times. If managed well on time we are a hit else we fail badly and end up ruining a lot many things.

But when you feel the urge to get over it, just for once go back into the time and see what made you get into it.

Instead of criticizing and cursing the relationship, understand how important and precious it was for you ones.

The LDR requires you to give immense love and commitment, so that none of you feels the lack of that hug, that late night call, that touch, that feel.

The selfless love is now history, if you want some time you need to give a lot of it. And a few little tiny things can make your love go till eternity, no matter wherever you are.

Trust each other:

Be transparent in your relationship and give equal value to honesty and trust. If you love each other don’t let the trust go away, it is the building block of great stories. Stop intervening too much , stop being ridiculous. If you hate it, the other person feels the same.

Romance must go on

“Give a little something — mail a gift, write a love song, send a balloon-o-gram, order lunch and have it delivered to your honey — just make it happen,” says Falzone. When you are so far away all these small acts are hard to execute, but if you try and think you can achieve it. Show your that you love you care and you want to make it for forever.

 long-distance-relationship

Use that technology

Almost all long distance couples can agree that video chat is the easiest way to stay in touch with your loved one. It is always amazing to see that face when you are talking, to check out that little expression when you are narrating a story. Calling over phone is convenient but why would not you want to have a conversation that feels more like a real one.

15604_20120831_072131_562809_404218106294114_1915254480_n

 Use the “Future” terms

Weird right! But yes this is a mandate; the person must see that you are taking it beyond the current zone of being cozy. A rough patch in your relationship can be avoided if you bring in the FUTURE in between. This clearly mentions how steady you feel in this relationship regardless of the distance. If you don’t get into the big uncomfortable dialogues, all the emotional investment will be lost and gone.

Don’t be bossy!

Never ever try to control the life of the other person. Everyone wants freedom , eevryone has a circle, everyone wants to breathe in the air that suits them. Set them free and said in point 1, trust them . A relationship does not make you the owner of the other person’s life. REMEMBER this and you are not far away from wonderful life with love loaded into it.

Long distance isn’t easy; but if you do it right, it is worth all the pain and drama you went through in it. Love is not as simple as it sounds to be, put yourself into it to receive the complete self of other person, if they are yours they will be around , no matter what the distance is 🙂

To keep the spark alive :D

All of  you in love must have realised or seen at some point that the charisma is losing up or the-very-famous-change has arrived in your loved one. But wait a minute why cant we just try a simple steps and not allow that change to take over our relationships 🙂

Here are few simple tricks:

1. Keep posting and poking : the love of your life loves it when you keep writing those random texts to him or her but the one thing that adds topping on the pineapple cake is the note that you secretly slip onto their wallets or pockets. When they read it , they certainly get the best smile of the day . Try this and you will say thanks 😉

1518f73bf9122ae2db632b19a586c8a9

2. You look beautiful : yes you look great as well ! The random compliments out of nowhere makes them wonder how much love ponders every day in you . You love that person , you love everything about him / her , just keep reminding them. Love needs to be expressed all the time 🙂

4795d57a19bf65d78183e07a33ad4582

3. Time : even if you are the busiest today , call your love amidst it just for 2 minutes to say *i love you* and you made both of yours day. It’s just that they must know that your clock strikes your thought with every passing minute.
c6d88606d58fa69ed6298700c2c61638

4. Small little perks : because my love loves snickers I must always have it in my bag . This surprises them and makes you fall in for you more every time .

5. Make plans : take initiatives and make plans to visit their favourite play or cafe or restaurant or may be that movie that they have wanted to see from long. Don’t wait for them. Be the one to book your tickets .
0f2ea9ab16f9e26aa468f317c12404c9

6. Food : keep a check on what kinda things they love to eat and how they like to eat it. This melts them away. Salty, spicy , moderate , what is their taste, you must know this and don’t forget to show it to them.

7. Treat his/her friends as your own. They are the most treasured part of your love’s life , make them yours

Keep loving 🙂
